Amiboshi & Suboshi
Fushigi Yuugi
Completed- September 2002
When I was in High school and was actively auditioning for contests and to get a scholarship for college, Claude Debussy's "Syrinx" was one of my lucky pieces for flute. I found it so easy to express myself through the song's inner mystery. The progression of the melody and the way it just echoes was something I always felt inside.
When I watched the anime Fushigi Yuugi, I noticed Amiboshi's first tune is the beginning of Syrinx, played over and over with increasing intensity. It fascinated me how the story behind Syrinx and Amiboshi's appearance itself seemed to fit together so well.
My friend Van wanted to cosplay a certain version of Suboshi in her favorite colors. As I was making the costume for her, one of us (I can't remember which) got the idea for me to be Amiboshi. Afterall, I DID know the melody, and crossplay would be a challenge to say the least.
Van was so nice to get my wig for me and help teach me how to bind my chest, which, no matter what, just does not bind very far. Aside from that, it was a wonderfully comfortable costume and out of the ordinary for me. Hardly anyone knew who I was, even as I was "blowing heads up" with that old familiar melody.
